What’s all the hype about dance recitals?

When I found out I was having a baby girl a while ago, 24 years to be exact. First thought was I can’t wait to sign her up for dance and get her a little pink leotard and baby ballet slippers. When the time came, exactly 2 and 3/4 we headed to the local dance studio and signed up. Now at this time I also had another baby girl in tow so I knew if my oldest had my lack of coordination my second daughter was my next victim. Now every child is different but it devastated me to see all the children having so much fun and mine would not leave my lap and if I tried to leave the room she would scream. What was I going to do? Luckily after 3 tries she decided to disconnect her self from me and join in, yes, success!! When the kids are young you start with the investment of time and money of maybe one class a week for one hour, that’s all they can handle at that age. At the first recital u have your camcorder all charged up, a new tape and every family member u can think of to take part in this milestone and u just pray your child will just go out on stage and participate. Some kids go out on stage and take on the star role, others just stand there in shock, some completely freak out and some actually do the dance pretty darn good. One thing I never have had to do is accompany my child on stage but I have seen it happen many of times, I think I would’ve fainted. After that first year my daughter caught the dance bug and one class turned into 3 and not soon after that my next daughter was dancing so my investment of time and money doubled. We spent a lot of time in the car but it was all good great bonding time and we also learned to eat and dress on the run. I now have three daughters and they have all danced all the way till graduation, taken multiple classes, multiple days a week and also competed, very busy but it kept us close. So year after year we look forward to the end result, the recital. Why? Because every parent spends countless hours driving back and forth to the studio, large amounts of money on costumes, tights, makeup and special undergarments for what you ask? For the chance to see our beautiful children shine on stage and be proud of all they have accomplished throughout the year. Recital can be a happy time but a lot of times it is filled with sadness. So many of these kids have spent years and years together learning and bonding but there comes a time that the child has decided to move on to other opportunities or that time does come when they graduate from high school and move on to start the next chapter of their lives. I have experienced the senior sadness twice as a mom and have witnessed how excitement of the recital becomes total overwhelming sadness. I have one left who is 16 and I know that this time is coming fast. These kids spend so much time together that they become a family and after the last performance the feelings are bittersweet. So good luck to all those seniors graduating and to the kids that have turned their focus to other things, you will be missed. The show must got on.
